I have been a professional journalist since 1955, with twenty-two books published, more than 100 magazines and newsletters, and filing cabinets jammed with correspondence to hundreds of acquaintances. Yet, when attempting to describe our experience in selling our Tucson home and moving to Utah, words seem to fail me.

For years I have noticed realtors’ signs listing property in the vicinity of our Tucson house, 2915 N. Peter Seward Drive. Most seemed to carry the names Dean Groth and Long Realty. We would receive a postcard after properties were listed and another when they sold. So when Kathy and I decided to move to Utah to be closer to our literary markets, it was no-brainer to call Dean, who we had never met.

He seemed every bit as anxious to sell our house as we were. In a matter of hours, the sign was posted by our driveway. We were carefully briefed on how to make our home presentable. It was posted on MLS in hours. The next Sunday an ad appeared. Then an open house was scheduled. Ads were published and open houses held every Sunday thereafter. A professional photographer pictured the house for the Internet. Color flyers were published for the “Take One” box atop the sign.

Among those who came to see the place was a prospect that one of Dean’s employees had signed herself, who finally ended up as the buyer. But it wasn’t easy. Offers were made and rejected. Counteroffers were made and rejected. Dean and his associate conducted the negotiations with utmost professionalism. We ended up with a “take -it-or -leave it” offer, and presumed that would be the end of the dialogue... We listed the house for too much money—we knew that, but we persevered. Dean knew it, too, but he kept trying. The prospect was as stubborn as we were. We went back and forth for weeks and we were absolutely ready to give up on the prospective buyer. Dean played it cool, and one night we returned from a meeting and found the magic message from Dean—“He bought it!”

Dean and his associate were obviously serving two masters, both stubborn as hell. He wouldn’t give up, but at no time did we feel any pressure. We’ve ended up as personal friends. I intend to write about this adventure in the February issue of our company journal, folio. There will be a picture of Dean and his two new puppies in that edition. And Dean has a standing offer to be a guest in our wonderful new Utah home, anytime he pleases.
